Why do stems grow up and roots grow down?

Why do stems grow up and roots grow down?

Stems are meant so that plant can stand upright and roots are meant so that water and other essential substances are absorbed from the earth. Plants can respond to the Earth's gravity, which way is up and which way is down they can ‘sense’, so that their roots grow down into the soil and their stems grow up towards the light. If you turn a seedling upside down, the stem will turn upwards and the root will soon curl downwards again. To obtain water the root has to grow down into the soil. The leaves must be in sunlight so that photosynthesis can take place. Certain plant hormones control it. The response of a plant to gravity is called geotropism. The hormones cause it to change direction by slowing down the rate of growth on one side, when a root or stem tip is growing in the wrong direction.
