Why do some plants lose their leaves in autumn?

To avoid water loss most of the plants shed their leaves in autumn. A large number of trees shed their leaves in order to survive the cold during winter. They lie dormant for several months. The soil in temperate regions of the world is too cold during the months of winter for most broad leaved trees to take up enough water. However, the precious green chlorophyll is withdrawn before shedding the leaves. Therefore other pigments, such as yellows, oranges and reds are left, which give autumn leaves their familiar brilliant colors. The evergreen trees are mostly conifers of temperate regions. They have a thin, needle-shaped leaf that keeps water loss to a minimum. So they don’t have to shed their leaves during the winter.
