When were traffic lights invented?

Traffic lights were invented in the United States and were introduced in the city of New York in 1918 and they were fixed-time traffic lights. Eight years later the United States set up a Committee on Uniform Traffic Control. The purpose of traffic lights was to control the flow of traffic, determine the right of way at intersections and give greater safety to drivers. By linking successive traffic signals together a progressive movement through the streets can be provided.
Traffic lights were used for the first time in Britain at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, in 1928.
